1.The pilot compares his severe injury to finding a dead cat on the sofa. The simile reveals that the pilot's state of mind is unsteady, due to the fact that his thoughts are wandering.
2.The repetition of "I'm going to pass out"heightens the suspense of the story because it makes the readers question if the pilot is indeed going to pass out while conducting a plane.
3.From what I know of the historical context and background of the story,I think the pilot is afraid he will land in the water because his every thought is greatly influenced by the actuality that his country is at war. Thus, his life is constantly being threatened.
4.I think the pilot went to a hospital after he described the clouds and sun as whiteness and blackness because his descriptions of the place fits that of a hospital. For citation,he sees a white enamel basin and a small medicine glass.

4. The first column reflects the heritage when Elena's mom nags her about now being a senorita. Senorita is spanish so Elena is spanish or hispanic. The tradition in spanish is that if your in your mid teens and is a girl you are known as a woman or senorita. The attitudes of the writter is bored because she is tired of hearing the same thing over and over again.

The first column on page 568 reflects the heritage, traditions and attitudes of the writer by it telling the reader what it is her family do for a living, where they lived, emotions, and events that had occur. For example: "My mother was unhappy in Paterson, which seemed to fall from the sky in that hue." this shows the emotions that the family felt that day and time period. 3.

I would summarize the end of the story by saying that the girl Elena was very happy that she was going to be able to go over the Eugene's house even though the president was just killed and everyone that surrounded her was sad and shock. Her mother than told her that she was unable to go over Eugene's house and Elena couldn't understand why. everyone that surrounded Elena was very sad and spaced out, they didn't want to make a lot of noises. Only because soon they knew that they all would have to return back to where ever it is they came from.

Elena wont tell Eugene the fact that she can see his kitchen from her bedroom. she enjoys the fact that she is the only one that knows this.

3. To summarize the story from the end of pg. 567 I would say there is a girl named Elena who gets picked on a lot in school mostly from African Americans. This girls lives in a building that looks like a prison. When she looks out of there bedroom window she can see  into someone else kitchen. A old couple lives there until someone dies and the old couple moves. A little while after a little boy named Eugene and his family moves in and she still  watches  into their kitchen. She is crushing on Eugene but she is scared to talk to him because of what he will think so she basically stalks him.

6. It is ironic that Elena and Eugene have chosen to study the subject American History because the title is called American History. Also because on the day that they were suppose to study the president died and now today that is American History.

7. What id revealed about the writers attitude and discrimination and prejudice is she doesn't think it's positive and she don't agree with it. I said this because in the beginning of the story Elena gets picked on by African Americans and she talks about how it makes her feels.

They liked each other and they both are smart.

3.) So far the story is about Elena and she likes a boy name Eugene but she does not know how to tell him explain, they have some of the same interest , but Elena still is not sure if Eugene feels the same for her as she does for him.

4.) I think that the writer family was on her more about her heritage but she wanted to be her own self and not just be a  senorita but also try new things.

5.) Mr. DePalma was a strict person, but at the same time he still had feeling, and he took the death of President Kennedy Strongly emotionally and too Elena for surprise because she never saw him as that type of person.

6.) It was ironic because the day they want to study is the same day that President Kennedy was killed, and it makes them seem like they have no sympathy at all.

7.) She thinks its unfair because she really liked Eugene but because of his mother discriminating against Elena's race she never got a chance to even study with him and express her feelings.Thats why i think Eugene was so quiet and shy  because he knew exactly how his mother would react to the whole situation.

Answers to the questions

1; I think this story is a about this girl, who use to live in Puerto Rico, who moves to American and soon starts to like a boy who doesn't like her.
2; Some Ways Elena and Eugene are alike is that they both like to read books and both go to the same school. Some ways they are different is that Eugene lives in a house while Elena lives in E1 Apartment, plus Eugene is in the honors class for all his classes while Elena is a stalker looking in the whole school for him.
3; I think on page 567 is about Elena and Eugene finally started to get a little closer to each other. They started to walk each other home, pick out books together, and Elena was really starting to fall in love.
4;The first column on page 568 shows that her traditions in her family is that when you are 14 you are a senorita. She also talks about when she was younger she remebers going to Puerto Rico to go to a funeral and all she remembers and meeting people clamming to be her aunts, uncles, and cousins. The attitude of the writer is that she is upset at her mother because she is acting very vigilant. The mother keeps nagging her about virtue, and morality.
5;The significants of Mr. DePalma's behavior on page 569 was that is a emotional man that doesn't like to show it. This behavior shows me that he is a person that tries to act manly but he really does have emotions.
6;It's ironic that they chose to study the same subject of American History because this is what the story is called and is what it is based off of. Plus they are still studying even though the president got shot.
7; The author's attitude towards the prejudice was that she was upset. Eugene's mother didn't like her only because she is a Puerto Rican that lives in the E1 building. The lady is just judging her and she doesn't even know the little girl.

3. Elena and Eugene are a couple of teens who live in the same neighborhood and go to the same school they were timid to talk to each other but are now good friends.
4. Elena's family must have an attitude that is protective of their young ladies. They want them to be modest, virtuous, and lady-like not promiscuous.

"American History" Questions

1.Prediction- I believe this story will be about how the death of John F. Kennedy marked an unforgettable moment in history. I think what will make the story interesting is that it'll be told from the point of view of a student.

2.  Eugene and Elena are alike in that they are both in the same grade and like to read. Elena and Eugene are different in that  Eugene's family is from the south and he is white while Elena's family is Spanish and she is Puerto-Rican.

3. A boy named Eugene and a girl named Elena like each other but are both too shy to admit it.

4. From the following information the writer wrote, I can predict that the author is spanish, she values the dreams of herself and others. Also that  she spent lots of time with her family in her homeland(Puerto-Rico), she loves her homeland, but at the same time she isn't afraid of new possibilities.

5.  Mr. Depalma's  sad behavior is significant because it symbolizes the pain the world experienced after the death of John F. Kennedy.  The behavior of Mr. Depalma shows that he really is a sensitive person, but he tries to be rough in order to deal with the children of the school and to possibly gain respect.

6. It is ironic that Eugene and Elena have chosen the subject of American History because at the time in which they lived, American History was being made. They were living in a moment that would soon be in our textbooks.

7. I can infer that the author feels very strongly about discrimination and prejudiced. I believe the fact that one of the characters actually witnesses it on a first hand account might reflect what the writer herself has experienced when it comes to prejudiced or discriminate people.
Her attitude is one of regret that such may even exist.
