American History-yaz

1. Skim and scan the story, what predictions can you make?
-The predictions I made were that someone will get shot in the mist of President Kennedy's death.

2. What are some ways that Elena and Eugene are alike? In what important way do they differ?
-Elena and Eugene were both smart, live in the same neighborhood, went to the same school, and seemed to like each other. They were different because Eugene was in the honors classes, while Elena was in regular classes because English wasn't her first language.

3. How would you summarize the story at the end of page 567?
-I would say Elena is getting older, and her mom is starting to notice that she likes someone and wants to watch over her so she doesn't make any bad decisions.

4. How does the first column on page 568 reflect the heritage, traditions, and attitudes of the writer?
-It's reflected by her parents keep telling her that they're going to move to the suburbs where they have pure snow and healthy grass. Also, by her parents saying they're going to buy a house on the beach in Puerto Rico where they're from. That's all saying that they want the good life like they were used to when they were kids.

5. Elena characterizes Mr. DePalma as a strict disciplinarian. What is significant about his behavior on page 569? What does his behavior show about him as a person?
-It's significant that he was trying to let the kids know about an important, historical event. It shows that he cares to tell the children something, and cares for them to know, but if they don't listen then he can really care less about the situation.

6. Why is it ironic that Elena and Eugene have chosen to study the subject of American History?
-It's ironic because at the time they were attending school and studying American History, an important event in history took place.

7. What is revealed about the writer's attitude toward discrimination and prejudice?
-It reveals that no matter the color of your skin or race we all have the same place and feelings in the world. Also, everybody should be accepted as one however they think and feel.
