The first column on page 568 reflects the heritage, traditions and attitudes of the writer by it telling the reader what it is her family do for a living, where they lived, emotions, and events that had occur. For example: "My mother was unhappy in Paterson, which seemed to fall from the sky in that hue." this shows the emotions that the family felt that day and time period. Another example is: Her grandmother's funeral, everyone was wearing black and she as too young to understand why.
